Germany November GfK consumer sentiment -30.8 vs -30.9 expected
The breakdownThe latest GfK survey shows that German consumer sentiment is set to slip marginally heading into November, amid growing inflation fears and more subdued income prospects.
Looking at the details, consumers' economic expectations improved for a sixth straight month in rising to 2.1 from -3.4 previously. This is the first time the sub-index has moved above zero since the start of the US-Iran conflict.
However, that optimistic signal is offset by another fall in income expectations. That fell to -15.7 from -15.0 previously, reflecting a modest decline after the slump in the prior month. Meanwhile, price expectations were also seen increasing further to 1.0 - moving back into positive territory. The survey shows that consumers are again expecting somewhat higher inflation, especially after consumer prices rose to 3.3% in September amid higher fuel prices.
GfK notes that: "Consumers are looking increasingly optimistic at economic developments but when it comes to their own wallets, skepticism still prevails. Growing worries about inflation and subdued income prospects are dampening the willingness to make larger purchases, even if the propensity to save is falling somewhat."
In any case, the data here won't do much to change anything for the ECB decision tomorrow. And in looking to December, it just reaffirms the backdrop that the German economy is still showing uneven signs in terms of growth recovery as households and consumption remain a bit of an issue.
What does the data measure? The GfK consumer climate index measures German households' confidence in their financial prospects and willingness to spend. It draws on consumer surveys covering income expectations, purchasing intentions and saving behaviour.
Why does it matter to markets?Household consumption is an important driver of German economic activity. Weak confidence suggests consumers may delay major purchases and prioritise savings, limiting domestic demand and making a sustained economic recovery more difficult.
How does this fit the broader economic picture?Germany's economic outlook remains uneven. Recent business surveys suggest some improvement in expectations but households are still struggling with purchasing power concerns and economic uncertainty. The contrast between business optimism and consumer pessimism suggests that any recovery may struggle to gain traction without stronger household spending.
Current relevance to markets?Minimal. The release offers a useful indication of Germany's economic health but is unlikely to be a major market mover on its own. With the ECB widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged tomorrow, much of the attention is shifting towards December instead. So, persistently weak German consumer confidence would add to concerns about domestic demand. And that could potentially complicate the case for further tightening before year-end.
